This has been an interesting day. We were a little late because we were feeding all this speech material that I've worked so hard on into a teleprompter machine, only to find out it is incompatible with the teleprompter we had here. (Laughter.) the end of this speech, you won't know whether I can spell or not, but you'll sure be able to tell if I can read. (Laughter, applause.)

Notwithstanding that, let me say how very glad I am to be here and how appreciative I am for the opportunity to address you. I appreciate the introduction which Dick gave me. I always enjoy speaking to people who are concerned about world affairs. Ever since I left my native state for virtually the first time when I was 18 to go off to the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, I have been profoundly concerned with the role of America in the world and the impact of events around the world on our nation and the happenings within other countries with which we ought to be concerned.
Before I get into my remarks today, I would like to recognize the presence of two people who, one by example and the other by example and friendship, have been important to me. The first is your former governor, Pat Brown, who is sitting up here and a person I admire very much. (Applause.) The second is my very good friend,
