Hong Kong manufacturers have received encouraging business from the recently completed International Housewares Exposition in Chicago the biggest of its kind in the US.

Eighteen manufacturers clinched orders wori.h HK$27 million (US$3,5 million) with a further HK$81 million (US$10.4 million) of business under negotiation.

Despite the sluggish American economy, confirmed orders tripled, while pending orders more than doubled in value compared with last year.

And there is a robust market in Europe for Hong Kong's gift and stationery products where a delegation to the Milan Trade secured orders worth HK$85 million (US$11 million).

Turnover for the six months to the end of December was HK$443 (US$56.8 million), up HK$36 million (US$4.6 million) at the same stage last year.

The directors say that while uncertainty in the world economy and high local inflation make profit forecasting difficult, they are that profits for the current year will exceed that of 1991.
