area where I or the British Government can or should wave a magic wand. It must be up to Hong Kong to decide where to strike the balance between adequate regulation to protect investors and maintaining their reputation as a profitable and successful centre for trade and commerce.
What we can do is to make sure that British business gets the very best support from the British Trade Commissioner and his staff in Hong Kong. I believe Peter Heap has done a formidably good job in ensuring that British business and investment is given the fairest wind possible. The FCO is in regular correspondence with him, as is the DTI and I am quite sure that his successor Stephen Day, currently Ambassador in Tunis, will be just as effective.
Yaus sincerity.
