2. I think in fact that on Hong Kong, Sir Charles will
want to talk to the PUS about general issues rather than the
minutiae of Jardines' concerns. The latter are now less
fraught than they used to be. Jardines have all but secured their secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange: the
question of the application to them of the Hong Kong
takeover code has been put off by mutual agreement until the
end of the year; and the problem over a banking licence for
Jardine Fleming is not one on which they have badgered us
recently.
3. I keep in pretty close touch with Sir Charles, and
expect that the following will be higher on his agenda:
the new Governor
-
the Airport Project. Jardines have an interest in the
Anglo-Japanese Consortium (AJC) bidding on the major
bridge contract (the Lantau Fixed Crossing) through their
construction subsidiary in Hong Kong, Gammon. The
latest date we have for the announcement of this contract
is 18 May. Like all participants in the Anglo-Japanese
