Dear Jim,

I am writing today in my capacity as a member of the Council of the Hong Kong Freedom Association, an organization formed after the Tienanmen Incident to promote awareness amongst the general British population about the political situation in Hong Kong. I am writing in the hopes that it would be possible for you to be part of a four member panel which will discuss the topic "Hong Kong: Prospects for a Democratic Future ?" at our Annual General Meeting on 31 October, 1992.

I am particularly anxious that you should be a part of the panel because of your long experience in China and Korea, and because of your scholarly research. on the diplomatic history of East Asia. The Meeting will be held from 2 PM, probably in Westminster Methodist Central Hall, with the panel beginning at 2:30 and ending at 4:00. This will be followed by tea and the business meeting itself.

Members of the panel will include, we hope, a member of Legco, an academic, and perhaps an interested Member of Parliament. I cannot at this point tell you precisely who will be on the panel, but we hope to get a broad range of people with interests in the question of Hong Kong's future.

If it is not possible for you to be a part of the panel, could you suggest someone else who might be suitable ?

Best wishes,

James
