It is estimated there are 1923 restaurants in Hong Kong. Extortion by Triads takes the form of one-off initial payments, monthly operating fees, and possibly the provision of compulsory
· parking services. If all pay an initial sum on average of $30,000, then this equates to $57.6 million. If on average, all pay a monthly fee of $8,000 then this gives a figure of $15.3 million per month, or $184.6 million per year.
SMUGGLING
Triads are involved in financing the building of speedboats, the provision of electrical items and the supply of manpower for loading the goods. Based upon the number of speedboat sightings in 1989 and the fact that Customs and Excise Department seized $56 million worth of goods intended to be smuggled to China, it is estimated the value of undetected goods was ten times that amount. The goods have a resale value of approximately twice their purchase price in Hong Kong. There were 660 vehicles stolen in 1990 and not recovered. These had a value of a little over $200 million. Some have been positively
identified to have ended up in China.
SPORTS AND RECREATION
In 1990, 98 martial arts associations were in existence. 14 (or 14.2%) had Triad connections. These may still be used as a place of recruitment for new members. In 1984, a Taiwanese Triad Society gained a foothold in Hong Kong through the establishment of a sports Society. It is still operating at present, and the Society is actively engaged in the film industry and video-tape distribution to overseas markets.
TICKET SCALPING
One Triad Society controls the monopoly of ticket scalping at the Shun Tak Centre, Central. The resale of hydrofoil tickets nets regular although comparatively small amounts of money. Two recent arrest cases involved sums of $47,330 and $50,000 respectively.
