Two types of Triad are involved in this business. The first is the one who controis the area in which the establishment is located. The second type is the Triad who takes control of the premises itself, either in the form of providing bouncers, or security guards/Personal Relations managers who are not required to be on the premises at all times. It is estimated of the following establishments :

(a) 96 nightclubs pay $4.8 million per month, or $57.6

million per annum;

(b) 255 karaokes, bars and lounges pay $5.1 million per

month, or $61.2 million per year;

(c) 71 billiard halls pay $710,000 per month or $8.52

million per annum; and

(d) 13 discos pay $130,000 per month or $1.56 million

per annum.

PROSTITUTION

A recent case highlighted the amount of money involved in prostitution. In June 1991, a diary was seized from a Triad member operating a guest house in Mongkok. In this were 611 names of persons controlling 242 local Chinese girls, 158 Philipina, 150 Malaysians, 53 Thai and 8 European prostitutes. At the current cost of $800 per woman, and if each serviced a conservative 10 customers per day this equates to $4.88 million, or $122 million per 25 day month. Half of this amount is paid to the prostitute, whilst the remainder in retained by the operators.

PUBLIC LIGHT BUS

Out of the 96 red bus routes in Hong Kong, it is confirmed that 57-(or 60%) are under the influence of Triad control. 60% of 2917, the total number of red buses operating in Hong Kong is 1750. Extortion takes the form of 'entrance' fees to use the bus terminal (average $1600), monthly 'management' fees (average $300), and 'sundry' payments such as cleaning fees (average $300). For the 1750 red buses, this equates to $2.8 million from one-off 'entrance' fees, and $1.05 million from monthly payments.
