C. FOREIGN LAWYERS

1.

In order to practise law in Hong Kong, a foreign lawyer would have to be registered under the Scheme, and to do

so would have to fulfill the following criteria:

he must be duly qualified to practise the law of the jurisdiction(s) on which his application for registration is based and in good standing in the jurisdiction(s) concerned.

he must satisfy the Law Society that he is a fit

person; and

he must be covered by professional indemnity insurance in respect of his practise in Hong Kong comparable to the level of coverage required under

the compulsory scheme for Hong Kong qualified

solicitors.

2.

A

registered foreign lawyer,

solicitor, would not be able to:-

The

practise Hong Kong law; or

unless also a Hong Kong

hold himself out or permit himself to be held out

as a Hong Kong solicitor; or

employ or join in partnership with a Hong Kong solicitor to practise Hong Kong law.

Scheme would not affect foreign lawyers working as paralegals.
