At the meeting here on 21 July with Rob Wright, we agreed to let you have some information relating to the numbers of non PV(S) posts in the Home Civil Service.
2. On the basis of the figures produced by Hugh Taylor (then Head of Security Division) in his 1987 report on the Review of Security Vetting, there were 444,000 NV posts in Government departments and the Armed Services. In addition there were 250,000 NV postholders in Industrial firms, giving a total of 694,000 NV posts within the vetting system.
3. Of the 444,000 posts in Government and the Armed Services only 90,000 were in Government with the remainder (354,000) in the Armed Services. The armed services include the Army, Navy and RAF, MOD HQ and the Research Establishments. of the Government posts, 24,000 were in DOE (PSA), 21,600 in UKAEA and 13,500 in the Home Office. No specific figures for the Police in England and Wales are available.
