On transfer, an officer may be required to serve a specified probationary period prior to confirmation to the permanent establishment. His service on agreement for which no gratuity has been paid may count as pensionable service. augment pensionable service, payment of contributions due to the Widow's and Children's Pensions Scheme and refund of gratuity payments less tax paid but with interest may be made by one lump sum or by monthly instalments, normally at the rate of 25% of monthly pay.
Officers serving on probation may, during the period of probation apply to the Secretary for the Civil Service to transfer to agreement terms. Such an application is only approved if there are strong compassionate grounds or it is in the Government's interest to alter the officer's terms of appointment. If such a transfer is applied for within three months from the date of appointment on probation and is approved, the transfer takes effect from the date of appointment; but if an application made more than three months after the date of appointment is approved, the transfer takes effect from the date of application.
A member of H.M.O.C.S. wishing to be considered for transfer or promotion to another overseas territory should make an application to the Secretary for the Civil Service with a completed Personal Record Form P.2 (G.F. 25).

If appointed in Hong Kong, date of appointment is the date of assuming duty. Date of appointment for officers selected overseas is the date of embarkation unless (a) a required duty visit or attendance at a course, with pay, immediately precedes the journey or (b) the direct journey is broken or travel is by an abnormal route. In case (a) date of appointment will be, the date of starting the visit or course. In case (b) date of appointment will be set as date of arrival in Hong Kong back-dated by a standard time taken for the direct journey.
The date of commencement of resident service for officers selected overseas is the date of arrival in Hong Kong.
The date of appointment or promotion of an officer transferred from another territory is the effective date of transfer.
