As you know, the Secretary of State will now be meeting the Chief Secretary on Thursday 2 July to discuss Hong Kong pensions. The Chief Secretary is content for Mr Patten to be present too. I am discussing with the Treasury whether there should be an official on each side, but the likelihood is that there will not be.
Since the meeting is at 0900 on Thursday, the Secretary of State has asked for an 0830 briefing at 1 Carlton Gardens. He would be grateful if you would attend, together with Mr Kirby and, if you wish, Mr Stone. I am sure that if Mr Patten wished to be present, the Secretary of State would welcome that.
Perhaps you would provide written briefing, including copies of the most recent correspondence, by close of play on Wednesday 1 July.
