one from your constituent, Mr Roger Sparkes of Milton Street, near Alfriston.
The Joint Declaration, agreed between Her Majesty's ̋
Government and the Government of the People's Republic of
China in 1984, does not specifically address the question
of cemeteries in Hong Kong. However, Article 53 should provide some reassurance for Mr Sparkes' mother-in-law:

"After the establishment of the Hong Kong Special
Administration Region, the laws previously in-force-in- Hong Kong (ie the common law, rules of equity, ordinances, subordinate legislation and customary law). shall be maintained," (save for any that contravene ther

Therefore, even after the transfer of sovereignty which takes effect from 1 July 1997, the Director of Urban Services in the then Special Administrative Region ̈ Government will remain the Authority for public
