LETTER FROM MR TIM RATHBONE MP
FROM: E L Williams
Hong Kong Department
DATE: 29 January 1992
HKA 225/
Problem
A 1.
Mr Tim Rathbone MP's letter of 16 January to
Lord Caithness, enclosing one from a constituent whose
mother-in-law is concerned about the future of the Hong Kong
Cemetery after 1997.
Recommendation
2. I recommend a reassuring reply and submit a draft.
Background
3.
Mr Sparkes' eighty-year-old mother-in-law, Mrs Morris, is worried about the future of the Hong Kong Cemetery after 1997. Her parents and brothers and sisters, buried in Shanghai, were reinterred there in 1948.
B 4.
In their letter of 24 January, the Urban Services Department of the Hong Kong Government go into some detail about possible disinterment of pre-1 December 1977 burials and how unlikely this is in the future. I think any mention of possible disinterment would give Mrs Morris more cause
for worry.
The Urban Services Department's offer to visit the relevant plots and forewarn Mr Sparkes should any disturbance be necessary, should give adequate reassurance.
