I enclose a copy of a Reuter's report of comments made by Xu Peng, Vice President of the China State Construction Engineering Corporation while on a visit to Singapore. He raises the old issue of alleged favouritism shown by the HKG to British firms in the awarding of contracts for the new airport. His comments are reported in today's Chinese language press and were the second item on this morning's radio news.
We have not seen these kind of allegations for some time and given the level of press interest in more pressing issues, I doubt Mr Xu's comments will run; we intend to remain silent in the hope that the story will die from lack of oxygen. It is in any case for the Hong Kong Administration to rebut accusations of favouritism, Mr Xu's comments do however serve to remind us that such accusations are still very much in vogue and will surface quickly if and when we win another contract.
