TRANSCRIPT: British Senior Representative of JLG, Anthony Galsworthy speaks to press before Airport Committee meeting at Colvin House

the request of the As you know this meeting is being held at Chinese side and we are hoping that they will answer the propositions which we put to them at the last meeting. So, we're looking forward to hearing what they say.

Q:

If it is likely that Chinese are going to reject it? If that's the case, do you have any alternative proposals?

Mr Galsworthy:

Well, I think in half and hour I'll know what the Chinese are going to do. so I don't think I'm going to speculate about that. (Indistinct question:) No, the proposition on the table is the one we put last time and we're looking for a reply to that.

Q:

Mr Galsworthy, with apologies to the Governor. Mr Patten said you could sort this out in the morning with a break for coffee, yet you seem to having a number of five-course dinners. What's gone wrong? What's the main sticking point?

Mr Galsworthy:

There may be no sticking point if the Chinese accept the propositions we've put to them last time, and of course that's what we're hoping for.

Q:

Mr Galsworthy, will you be flexible in your negotiations?

Mr Galsworthy:

This meeting is being held to hear the Chinese response to our position. That position was based on suggestions they themselves had put forward. So we think their response should be positive. But of course we don't know until we hear what it is, what it will be.

Q:

Will the British side have any response on the spot during this meeting?

Mr Galsworthy:

That depends on what the Chinese say. I can't possibly tell you because I don't know what they're going to say.
