PRESS RELEASE
PROVISIONAL AIRPORT AUTHORIY
EIA Study Positive on Improved Layout
- ·
(HONG KONG, 6 November 1992) The Provisional Airport Authority has maximised environmental benefits from improvements to the layout of Hong Kong's replacement airport at Chek Lap Kok.
A comprehensive supplement to the Airport Master Plan environmental impact assessment (EIA) has found that the modified layout produces no major changes in impacts.
On the plus side, by eliminating the need for reclamation on eastern Chek Lap Kok, about 2.5 kilometres of natural coastline are saved and the quantity of mud to be removed is reduced by approximately two million cubic metres.
"The Authority is strongly committed to protecting the environment. We will adopt all necessary monitoring and mitigation measures to ensure that the modified layout does not create adverse effects," Its Project Director, Mr Douglas Oakervee, said.
·
The scope and findings of the EIA supplement, which was recently completed by the Airport Master Plan consultants Greiner Maunsell, have been reviewed and approved by the Environmental Protection Department.
"The Environmental Protection Department has been closely involved in our EIA studies throughout. The department is satisfied our plans for Improvement will comply with all Government environmental guidelines and criteria," Mr Oakervee said.
Under the improved layout, the passenger terminal complex is relocated 190 metres to the west. The southern runway is shifted 360 metres westwards to accommodate the rail and road alignments.
These moves produce a requirement for a minor reconfiguration of the western boundary of the airport island but there is no net increase in the amount of reclaimed land because of savings in reclamation at the east.
