PADS: ANGLO JAPANESE CONSORTI UM
Sir Gordon Manzie called in to bring us up to date on the latest developments. I began by congratulating him warmly on the results of his endeavours over the years. Yesterday's ground breaking ceremony was genuinely historic.
Tsing Ma Bridge
An executive committee had been set up under Sir Gordons chairmanship with two directors from each of the three members of the consortium. Decisions would be by unanimity and they would meet four times a year, usually in Hong Kong. A project manager had been appointed - Mr Nicholas Hobson who had just arrived in Hong Kong for a recce visit. He would initially work out of the Hopewell Building. His previous job was running Redpath Offshore and he had a substantial experience of delivering large equipment on time and on budget to the oil industry.
Barry Myers, Chairman of Gammon would coordinate the Gammon input and aimed to convene his board at the same time as the consortium board meetings, ie in parallel. had been agreed that Gammon would have over 40% of the substructure the rest of the substructure divided between the three consortium partners. Gammon would not, of course, be involved in the superstructure.
It
The Commercial Director for Trafalgar House would be Mr McBrairtey. Ken Hollanders, who ran the local office, would now become part of the Cleveland superstructure team. That would probably be entrusted to Dick Thorpe. (who is involved in building the Hong Kong Bank), Jeremy Beaton, ex Dubai and now MD of Cleveland would be keeping an eye from London.
Sir Gordon hoped to back in Hong Kong again around 9 September for the next board meeting.
Kap Shui Mun Bridge
Top
Sir Gordon had made contact with some of the key people involved in the decision on the next bridge award. He believed the consortium were second lowest bidders. on price were Kumagi/Kap Shui Mun. But Mr Kwei, Director of Highways, had stressed the importance of the design package. Price was not necessarily the key consideration.
