Support and Ancillary Facilities
For the airport to function efficiently and successfully, wide range of additional facilities is required. These facilities may either provide functions directly in support of aviation activity, or may assist in the com- mercial development and financial viability of the airport.
Support facilities are those that must be located at the airport for it to function. They provide for a wide range of operation- al, maintenance, security and emergency services in and around the passenger ter- minal and airfeld. The two categories of support facilities are:
Airline/Passenger Terminal Facilities, and
Airport Operations and Maintenance Facilities.
Ancillary facilities are those that either must be located at the airport due to their dependence on the airport activities, or those that enhance the commercial viability of the airport by their presence. The two categories of ancillary facilitics are:
Commercial and Non-Commercial Facilities, and
Airport-Related Enterprises.
Airline/Passenger Terminal Facilities
The fundamental requirement shared by the airline/passenger terminal support facilities is their need to interface with ac- tivities occurring on the passenger terminal
apron.
Air Cargo
The air cargo facilities at the new airport will provide for the processing of inhound, transhipment and outbound cargo. The facilities will be located south of and imme- diately adjacent to the southern runway, such that dedicated cargo aircraft will have direct access from the runways. However, it is anticipated that 60% of air cargo will be transported in the holds of passenger aircraft, hence #eliable access from the air cargo facilities to the passenger terminal apron will be fequired for airside cargo
vehicles. This will be provided by two tun- nels below the southern runway. Direct access from the cargo facilities to the public highway will also be provided, to accom- modate the high volumes of cargo delivery traffic forecast, and the predominance of heavy goods vehicles involved.
The location of the air cargo facilities south of the runways balances the access require- ments for aircraft, airside cargo vehicles and public delivery vehicles.
Aircraft Maintenance
Full service aircraft maintenance will be
provided at the new airport. Simple aircraft linc maintenance will be performed at the passenger terminal apron and the cargo apron., Maintenance that requires an aircraft to be temporarily withdrawn from service will take place at the aircraft main- tenance facilities, located midfield and west of the passenger terminal. This location will provide good runway/taxiway access for aircraft, with minimum impact on other aircraft ground movements. Aircraft main- tenance vehicles being used for simple maintenance checks will have direct access to the aircraft parking apron at the pas- senger terminal.
In-Flight Catering
In-flight meals for camiage on passenger aircraft departing the airport will be prepared at these facilities. Good public highway access for local deliveries and employees as well as access to an efficient airside service road network is considered a priority for locating the catering facilities. The location south of the southern runway and immediately east of the air cargo facilities satisfies this requirement and provides ready access to the tunnels under the southern runway leading to the pas senger terminal apron.
Aviation Fuel Storage
A sufficient supply of aviation fuel will bo maintained at the new airport. The distribu- tion of fuel to the passenger and cargo aircrafi aprons will be by means of underground
•
pipelines and hydrant systems supplying each aircraft parking position. Two sites are provided for aviation fuel storage; one to the west and the other to the south of the air cargo facilities. The storage facilities have been separated for security reasons. with a view to ensuring a continuous supply of fuel at all times.
Ground Support Equipment Maintenance A basc for the maintenance of ground sup- port vehicles and equipment will be located south of the runways and west of the air cargo facilities.
Air Mail Centro
A large volume of air mail will be trans- ported through the new airport. A site for the sorting and distribution of air mail will be provided directly south of the in-flight catering facilities. This site is close to secured airside service roads to the pas senger terminal apron, and has good access to the public highway.
Airport Operations and Maintenance Facilities
Airpon operations and maintenance sup port facilities encompass a variety of roles which are essential for an airport to func- tion effectively. Facilities in this category include:
•
•
Air Traffic Control Complex;
C
Airport Maintenance;
Rescue, Firefighting and Sea Rescue;
Apron Control;
❤
District Police Station;
Fire Training Facility;
Isolated Aircraft Parking Position, and Meteorological Facilities.
Locations of these facilities are shown on the Airport Layout Plan in the centre pages of
this document.
Commercial and Non-Commercial Facilities
Although passenger and cargo aircraft will dominate activity at the new airpori, other
