NEW AIRPORT TO HAVE MINIMAL IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT

(HONG KONG. 2 March 1992) - airport at Chek Lap Kok places a strong emphasis on ensuring that the airport will have a minimal impact on its surrounding environment during construction and operation.

The report, released today by the Provisional Airport Authority (PAA), recommends monitoring, modelling and on-site mitigation programmes to ensure all environmental guidelines and criteria are complied with.
The environmental workstream of the master plan investigated in detail the impacts that could be expected during the construction and operation of the airport.
"The resultant environmental planning, from advanced noise monitoring systems through to comprehensive landscaping, does, I believe, demonstrate our commitment to the environment," the PAA's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Richard Allen, told a press briofing today.
All estimates in the Environmental Impact Assessment rely on projected construction and operation methods which continue to evolve. Many Impacts are projected decades into the future and can be very sensitive to changes in technology, the economy and population.

To compensate for this uncertainty, impacts have been assessed conservatively (i.e. tending to over-estimate), and the operational impact assessment will be updated as the master plan is implemented.
