The final layout provides for two parallel runways oriented northeast- southwest. Each will be 3,800 metres long and 60 metres wide, with 300 metre clearways at either end.
The separation between the runways, centreline to centreline, will be 1,525 metres. The airport will open with one runway the southern runway. The second northern runway will be completed as demand
grows.
To control air traffic, an Air Traffic Control Tower, an Air Traffic Control Centre (approach and area control) and an Aeronautical Information Centre are to be located between the runways immediately west of the western crossfield taxiways.
"Flight tracks have been selected to provide the safest arrival and departure routes. Navigational aids will be strategically located and radar will be installed to alert pilots to the possible presence of windshear," Mr Allen said.
The passenger terminal complex will be located at the eastern end of the island between the runways. When the new airport opens, it will consist of Terminals 1 and 2 with their attached passenger concourse. Terminals 3 and 4 will be built later, with a satellite concourse. Each terminal unit will have a capacity to process 22 million passengers a year.
The new airport will be designed with the walking distance minimised as far as practicable for passengers. The desired maximum walking distance has been set at 300 metres. A shuttle train, moving walkways and escalators will be provided where this distance is exceeded.
