The master plan is part of a much wider Comprehensive Airport Plan, which also includes the organisation plan, the financial plan and the commercial plan.

The master plan provides for the incremental development of an airport island, with development phases relating directly to forecast demand. Separate reports have been produced on the planning, civil engineering and environmental aspects.

Phase developments continue up to the year 2010 while Phase II development is completed in 2040.

Hong Kong presently has the fifth busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger throughput, and the fourth busiest in terms of air

cargo.

Forecasts of passengers, cargo, aircraft and related activity levels anticipate continued strong growth as the territory consolidates its financial, industrial and commercial position in the region. The tourism sector is also expected to remain buoyant into the foreseeable future.

With the increased capacity of the new airport, new destinations are expected to be added to existing airline schedules.

The new airport will open in 1997 with a capacity to handle 35 million passengers annually. The average annual air passenger growth rate is anticipated to be 4.4 per cent between 1997 and 2010, and 2.3 per cent between 2010 and 2040. The airport could be able to handle 87 million passengers a year in 2040.

Annual air cargo is projected to reach 2.3 million tonnes by 2010 and 8.9 million tonnes by 2040.
