We are and will continue to be in close touch with US. We believe
they understand seriousness of Hong Kong's position.

Use of Force
Repatriations are conducted in accordance with normal
international practices for the return of illegal immigrants. Every effort is made to ensure the operation is conducted as smoothly and as safely as possible both for government officials and returnees.
8 Monitoring
Mandatory returnees are seen by Embassy and UNHCR officials at the Co Nhue Reception Centre. Subsequently more than 80% have been seen
again.
9 Resettlement of Vietnamese Migrants in UK
We are making every effort to meet our target of resettling 1,700
Vietnamese from Hong Kong by 1 July 1992.
(If pressed) There were initial difficulties in setting up the resettlement programme in the UK but these are being overcome.
10 Effect of ORP on camp population in Hong Kong
- In first nine months of 1991, more than 18,000 new arrivals
(18,871); total applications for voluntary repatriation down to less
than 5,000 (4,700).
