The Ambassador said that in the light of our conversation the Americans would probably decide to let the matter rest. He would make sure that our reply was factored into the briefing for the President. It was, however, possible that the President might still raise the matter in general terms.
I said that Sir Robin Renwick had acted similarly with the State Department.

I suggest that you report immediately to the Ambassador in Washington.

Sir Robin Renwick is best placed to try to ensure that the issue is not raised, even in general terms, at Camp David.
