Many thanks for your letter of 11 November asking whether I could put you in touch with Chris Patten.

4

As you know, Chris Patten was in London last week. I arranged for your letter to be shown to him. He was grateful for your offer to arrange for one or two senior friends of yours in the Japanese community in Hong Kong to brief him before his visit there later in the month. He is always glad to meet members of the Japanese business community in Hong Kong. But he will only have two working days back in Hong Kong after 10 days away in Canada and Britain, before he has to leave for Tokyo. As you can imagine, his diary is impossible for those two days. But he hopes that there will be a possibility to meet you and your colleagues before his next visit to Japan in March 1993. I suggest that you make contact in due course with the Governor's Private Secretary, Mr Richard Hoare. We have ensured that he knows the background and the excellent work done by the Foundation.

Incidentally, Chris Patten also commented that you need not apologise for disagreeing with his proposals! He has said that he is interested to have comments and alternative suggestions: and he means it.
