CO-OPERATIVE RESOURCES CENTRE MEMBERS' VISIT TO BEIJING

Most respondents noted that members of the Co-operative Resources Centre (CRC) had been received by senior Chinese leaders, including the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Mr Jiang Zemin during their visit to Beijing. Some respondents welcomed the visit and regarded it as opening another channel for communication between Hong Kong and China. They said that being experienced Legislative Councillors, members of the CRC might be able to help China to obtain a better understanding of Hong Kong's political system.

These respondents were in favour of similar future visits by the CRC and other political

groups.

Many respondents

commented that one of the purposes of the visit was to dilute their current pro-UK/HK government image. They commented that CRC members must be eager to improve their relationship with the Chinese Government as they were concerned at their post 1997 political career. Some respondents said that the visit and the top level reception accorded to the delegation by the Chinese were moves to counteract the recent meeting between the Prime Minister, Mr John Major and Mr Martin Lee. These respondents believed that members of the CRC were also taking the opportunity to demonstrate their concern at the livelihood of the people of Hong Kong by raising with the Chinese leaders issues like law and order in Hong Kong and the housing problem of the sandwich class.

4.

Some respondents said that it was understandable why the Chinese Government had delayed giving support for the proposed financial arrangement, especially if indeed the issue of callable equity for the Mass Transit Railway Corporation and the Airport Authority had not been raised with the Chinese before. Some respondents said that since the future SAR Government would
