WHERE REQUIRED
The Posts and appointments where Diplomatic Service uniform is required overseas are listed at Annex 9.1. Uniforms are provided at public expense only for officers serving in these Posts and appointments.
DESCRIPTION
Details of Diplomatic Service uniforms are available on request from Personnel Services Department. See also Annex 9.2.
WEARING OF UNIFORM: SERVING MEMBERS
Diplomatic Service uniform may be worn only by members of the Service who hold commissions of appointment from the Crown. Uniforms other than Diplomalic Service uniform may not be worn during Diplomatic Service appointments without special permission from the Secretary of State.
The occasions on which uniform is worn vary from Post to Post and depend to a large extent on local custom. Unilorm is normally worn by Heads of Missions when presenting credentials and by members of their staffs when accompanying them on such occasions. It is also worn on other official occasions when considered appropriate by the Head of Mission.

WEARING OF UNIFORM: FORMER MEMBERS
Members of the Service may be granted permission to wear their Diplomatic Service uniform alter retirement or resignation, provided that the following conditions apply:
9.5
(a)
They have served for not less than 10 years.
(b)
There is, in the view of the Secretary of State, no special reason for withholding permission.
Other officers may not wear their uniform after retirement without the permission of HM The Queen, obtained through the Secretary of State. Former members of the Service are not required to return their uniforms after retirement or resignation. If however male officers do not wish to keep their sword and sword belt these may be returned to PSD for reissue.
INITIAL PURCHASE
Officers should obtain prior authority from Personnel Services Department for the purchase of a full dress and/or tropical dress uniform. They may then claim reimbursement of the cost within the limit specified when the authority is granted. The only tailor whose prices PSD consider reasonable is Mr C McNaughton, t/a G Rought and Co and Back and Lindgren at Alan Bennett, 36 Savile Row, London W1X AG (Tel 071-437 7986). An officer who chooses to use a more expensive tailor must meet the difference between the cost of the uniform
purchased and one costed by PSD.
