I am directed by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to confirm that Her Majesty The Queen has been pleased to approve your appointment as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Hong Kong in succession to the late Sir Edward Youde GCMG GCVO MBE.

As you know, a Governor holds officer during Her Majesty's pleasure, but the tenure of office in Hong Kong is normally understood to be for a period of five years resident service. Arrangements will be made for the issue of your Commission before your departure for Hong Kong.

The emoluments of the office are at present as follows:

Salary

Entertainment Allowance

HK$ 1,026,600 per annum (approx £87,000 p.a.)

HK$ 300,000 per annum (approx £25,420 p.a.)

(approximate rate of exchange:

HK$ 11.8

£1)

These are paid directly by the Government of Hong Kong and are tax-free. Transfer grants and climatic clothing allowances are not pavable to Diplomatic Service officers on Hong Kong Government terms.

The cost of running Government House and a country residence (upkeep and maintenance of buildings, furnishings and grounds, electricity, water, telephones, official cars, wages etc) and the cost of the Governor's staff are met from Hong Kong Government funds.
