Dear Prime Minister,
R7
The Hong Kong Civic Association has noted with great regret that the Governor, Sir David Wilson, will be relinquishing his post some time within the next 8 months.
The Civic Association believe that Sir David Wilson has been rendering invaluable service to the people of Hong Kong with wisdom, dedication and courage. The people of Hong Kong could not have asked
for more.
Our Association urge that any new Governor who is appointed should be prepared to be seen to be primarily representing the welfare and interests of Hong Kong and her 6 million residents.
This of course will not be easy especially since the new Governor will have to take due cognizance of his relations with the British and the Chinese Governments.
It cannot be over-emphasized that the confidence of Hong Kong people in the new Governor, whoever he may be, will critically reflect the people's confidence in the future, particularly in 1997 when Hong Kong and the rest of the world are looking forward to a smooth and peaceful transfer of sovereignty, so essential to continued prosperity, social stability and democratic development.
Sincerely. Hilton Cercoupleen
