PERSONAL ASSISTANT FOR GOVERNOR-DESIGNATE OF HONG KONG

1. As you will have seen in the press, we are expecting shortly the announcement of a Governor-Designate of Hong Kong.

2.

We are planning on the assumption that the Governor- Designate will be based in the FCO for the period of his briefing, which could be as long as two months. The Governor-Designate will receive a flood of messages, telephone calls, requests for appointments, etc, as well as no doubt having correspondence of his own to keep up. He will therefore need an experienced PA, in practice I think an S1 with experience of coping with senior Ambassadors. I have discussed this briefly with CDU. The job description will in part depend on the wishes and working style of the Governor-Designate. It may be that the PA appointment could be full time for the first month and then part time after that. It will be crucial to have a PA available pretty quickly after the Governor-Designate is appointed. That could be as early as next week.
