ROBIN OAKLEY (THE TIMES):
As one of the Conservative Party's thinkers, you have stood for a
particular brand of moderate conservatism. Does your willingness
to turn your back on Westminster politics at least for a while
mean that you now feel the Party is in safe ideological hands and
that there will be no resurgence of the kind of views that you
have sometimes combated?
MR. PATTEN:
I would not be so presumptious as to describe this particular
decision in my career in those terms but it is true that this is a
government which is led by one of my closest friends in politics,
which is composed of a number of my closest friends in politics
and which is discharging the sort of policies in which I
passionately believe and I think it will be an extremely
successful government led by an outstanding Prime Minister.
Thank you all very much indeed and I repeat that I am looking
forward to many future encounters if that is not too bold a word.
