QUESTION (AFP):
There are a lot of calls within Hong Kong for greater democracy
leading up to 1997 within the Legislative Council, how will you
tackle that problem?
MR PATTEN:
Perhaps I look much younger than my advancing years but I am not
entirely wet behind the ears and certainly would not think it was
wise to comment on matters of policy before I have had the
opportunity of reading myself properly into the subject of
discussing issues with the present Governor whose work I much
admire and other officials as well of course as the people I am
looking forward to seeing in Hong Kong. I have noticed in one or
two radio interviews with distinguished Hong Kong citizens in the
last few days that they have been extremely diplomatic and
judicious in what they have said about speculation that I might be
about to become the Governor. And I think I should exercise equal
judiciousness in responding to questions like that, entertaining
though they are.
