INTERVIEWER:
Foreign Secretary, would you rather that Chris Patten would have
stayed in British politics?
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
I would rather he would have kept his seat in Bath, yes, but it is
an ill wind and what Hong Kong now has is a Governor of unrivalled
political authority.
INTERVIEWER:
When Chris Patten was asked about his chances of returning to
British politics later on he quoted Cardinal Newman, he said:
"One step enough for me". Do you think in the real world that he
can step back into British politics sometime in the future?
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
With all my white hair I regard him as a lad, he has signed up for
Hong Kong until 1997 but he will still be full of energy and
vigour after that, so why not?
