In Sir John Coles' absence abroad, I am replying to your letter of 3 September.

I am able to tell you that there is no truth in the statements that the Deputy Public Prosecutor and the Attorney General engaged in the practices you mention. No such suggestion of wrongdoing was ever put to them and, had such a proposal been made, it would have been vigorously and unambiguously rejected.

Unfortunately, it appears that the transcript to which you refer was not a complete one. Had it been, it would have been apparent to you that the Crown formally issued a denial of the allegations, in court.
