AUS TRAVEL BUDGET

TOP 7/3

1.

Mr Sainty and Mr Furness of HKD are most grateful to

you for having made it possible for them to pay

familiarisation visits to Hong Kong in the near future.

They were perfectly happy to travel economy class at a

cost of £1,200 each.

2. As it happens, I have been making my own personal

enquiries about the cost of a return ticket to Hong Kong in

connection with Rosana's visit. When I spoke to the Thomas Cook implant in the FCO, they quoted me a ticket for a price

of £708. For this ticket, Rosana me could fly out on

BA or Cathay Pacific and return on the same airline on a

date and time of her choice. There would be a penulty

(about HK$ 300) if once booked, the flight is changed.

3.

In fact, £708 is well above the going "Soho" rate

(around £650).

4. My point is simply to ask whether the Thomas Cook

implant are giving the FCO the very best advice about

available tickets. In the case of desk officers, I am sure

that they could make use of this cheaper ticket facility,

thereby enabling other desk officers to benefit from

familiarisation visits.
