1. I am writing to thank you for organising a first-class familiarisation programme for me in Peking. I know the timing was less than ideal, and you had rather more important things to worry about than an FCO visitor, but I am immensely grateful for all the time and effort you put into my visit.
2. The calls on Chinese officials were particularly instructive. Sitting at a desk in London it is a little hard to form a picture of doing business with the Chinese: now I feel I have a much clearer idea of what you are up against! Many thanks too for deploying your impressive interpreting skills.
3. On the less formal side I enjoyed the splendid banquet you hosted and the opportunity to meet the MFA in a less businesslike environment. Thank you as well for setting up the interesting lunch with diplomats and journalists. I hope they didn't make too large a hole in your entertainment allowance.
4. Finally, I was also grateful for the few hours of sightseeing I squeezed in. Inevitably the three days all seemed a little rushed, but thanks to your arrangements I think I was able to maximise the time. Could you pass on my thanks to all those in the embassy who I met during my visit, particularly Steve and Shaun?
