Remit of the Steering

The
Deputy Crown Solicitor briefed members on the remit of the Steering Committee under the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Act 1990 and other statutory provisions applicable
to the Committee.

Members were generally content with the factual approach in publicising the Scheme so far, and made the following comments
(a)
Although the intention of making the
Scheme as transparent as possible was appreciated, publishing regular updates on applications received by occupational groups was likely to attract unfavourable media reports,
regardless of whether the numbers were large or small.
(b)
High profile
stepping
up
publicity, publicity
(c)
especially
near
the
closing date, might draw adverse
reaction from China.
The Steering Committee should be a working committee, the deliberations which should be confidential.
