Nationality Team in Hong Kong is currently processing these applications and the first passports will be issued soon to those applicants with the highest points quota. It is a lengthy process which will take urtil 1993 to complete.
Confidence in Hong Kong received a significant boost recently with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) over the airport project. After lengthy negotiations, the Chinese and British sides reached agreement on the commencement of the new port and airport to be constructed at Chek Lap Kok. This agreement will lead to an improvment in general relations across the board and should enable a smoother transition in the run-up to 1997. This added confidence will lessen further the already slim chance of large scale Hong Kong emigration to the UK.
