VISION 2047

Background

Vision 2047 was formed by a group of long-term Hong Kong residents who are committed to the future prosperity of their city and intend to remain in Hong Kong. Its members believe that Hong Kong can continue to play a vital role as a major

international center for business and trade after 1997 under the "one country, two systems" concept.

Vision 2047 was formed because of a shared concern that with the approach of 1997, business communities and other influential groups overseas have "written off" Hong Kong, doubting its viability under Chinese sovereignty. A lack of understanding of how Hong Kong will be governed as a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China contributes to a negative image of Hong Kong abroad. Vision 2047's objective is to communicate a private, business-oriented perspective on Hong Kong to the overseas business and diplomatic communities. Through personal contact with visitors to Hong Kong and in meetings overseas, Vision 2047 seeks to enhance understanding of Hong Kong, the challenges it faces, and the causes for optimism regarding its future.

Vision 2047's members all have the right of abode overseas, but consider Hong Kong their home. They are business people and professionals with diverse international backgrounds from a wide range of industries. Funds to support the group's efforts are contributed by individual members and other sponsors who share the group's optimism about Hong Kong and its future. Vision 2047 has no affiliation to any local political party or to any government bodies in Hong Kong, China, or Britain.

Vision 2047 began meeting informally in 1989. The group is now in the process of registration as a non-profit foundation in Hong Kong. Completion of the registration process is expected by September 1991.
