Thank you for your letter of 13 March to the Secretary of State about the British Nationality Scheme for Hong Kong and in particular your concerns for the barristers of
Hong Kong. I have been asked to reply.
the case
It is not true that no provision has been made for barristers under the nationality scheme. They are in fact eligible to apply within occupational group 16,
"Legal Professionals". But it is true that there is a
potential anomaly concerning the extra points for
"British links", which solicitors working for British
undertakings in Hong Kong will qualify for, but which
are not available to barristers.
I enclose copies of recent correspondence between the Minister and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar
Association I am sure you will be pleased to note that
the Hong Kong Government is trying to ensure that the
barristers in Hong Kong will be adequately covered.
