Letter to Mr Douglas Hurd 27 Febrary 1991
survival of the legal system in Hong Kong. Special consideration should therefore be given to practising barristers and a scheme which eliminates at least the anomaly resulting from the announcement should be devised so as not to favour solicitors at the expense of the practising Bar. This is all the more important in light of the fact that the quota of successful at icants in the Legal Professionals Group is limited only to 185 out of an estimated gro size of 2,100.
With a view to redress the unfairness to the barristers, the Association suggests. that all practising members of the Bar who are members of any one of the four Inns of Court in the United Kingdom, namely Gray's Inn, Lincoln's Inn, Middle Temple and the Inner Temple, which are clearly British undertakings within the meaning of the Scheme should likewise be able to receive up to 35 points at the rate of one point for every 6 months of membership of any of the Inns under the section relating to service with a British undertaking.
As the deadline for the submission of applications for the Scheme is imminent and to preserve the morale of our members, we strongly urge you as a matter of great urgency to adopt our suggestion and recommend the same to the Governor of Hong Kong.
Yours sincerely
