HONG KONG AIRPORT MOU: REACTIONS OF THIRD COUNTRIES
Mr
1. Mr Burns asked for a short note bringing together supportive statements and other noteworthy comments. Reactions from third countries have been almost universally
positive and have stressed the importance of the project for Hong Kong's prosperity and the boost in confidence in Hong Kong as an international financial and business centre. Not
all countries have issued press statements, although some are still considering doing so, whilst others have limited themselves to statements by officials.
2. Greek officials expressed gentle surprise that we have agreed to a Prime Ministerial meeting without consulting EC
partners. But France thought EC partners would accept the logic of the need for Prime Minister to visit China. And
the Italians were enthusiastic about Prime Minister's
Int Jup
proposed visit, believing this was precisely the right time iç. before Andreati's to begin high-level contact.
3.
I attach a more detailed list of the country reactions
which have been received to-date.
