Background

The new US Immigration Bill was signed by the President

on 28 November 1990. The Act contains several proposals specifically designed for Hong Kong including.

(i) The annual quota of visas will be increased to

10,000 per year for the next three years rising to

20,000 thereafter;

(ii) A further 12,000 visas per year for three years will be made available to Hong Kong residents who are

employees of US firms in the territory, and who have a

job offer in the USA;

(iii) Hong Kong people may apply to extend their visas

up to 31 December 2001.

(iv) There are special provisions for the locally

employed staff of the US Consulate General in Hong Kong.
