■ Do I need to send anything with the form?

18 Yes. We will need a detailed training programme with exact dates of the proposed training or work experience and sufficient documents to show that:

the overseas national meets the requirements of the scheme*;

the training meets the standards set by any appropriate regulating body;

the conditions attached to the issue of a permit are acceptable to both employer and employee.

If it is your first application under the scheme you also need to send a copy of your company's certificate of incorporation.

* In case of training leading to professional qualification, please submit either a photocopy of degree/diploma certificate or the latest examination result slip.

Where do you send the work permit?

21 If your application is approved, where we send the

work permit depends on the nationality of the person you have applied for:

■Commonwealth citizens living in a Commonwealth country or Pakistan — work permit is sent to the overseas national, through UK Government offices in the Commonwealth country and in Pakistan. We tell you that this has been done;

other overseas nationals the work permit is sent to you, the employer, for you to send on to the overseas national abroad.

■ What next?

22 On arrival in the UK, the overseas national will need

to show the immigration authorities:

the work permit;

a valid passport (not an identity card);

if necessary, a visa.

Without these documents, entry to the UK may be refused.

■ When should I apply?

19 At least eight weeks before you need the permit.

Delays will occur:

if you do not give all the information we need when you send the application;

if you send the application to the wrong address;

if the overseas national is already in the UK and you need to first send the application to the Home Office;

due to seasonal volumes of work.

You should allow more time if the permit is to be sent to a Commonwealth country or to Pakistan (see paragraph 21).

■ What happens then?

20 We consider your application. This means that a

number of checks are made to see whether all the rules for the issue of a permit are satisfied.

Note: Overseas nationals living abroad at the time of application are strongly advised not to travel before a decision is reached.

■ What if I later want to change the type of training or work experience provided to the overseas national?

23 You need our permission. You should apply again.

on form OW22 and give us:

full information as before;

detailed reasons why you want to change the training.

■What if I, or the overseas worker, want to end the training or work experience?

24 You do not need permission for this, but you must

notify this Department. The work permit is not a contract of employment. It does not bind you and the overseas national together. The work permit does not allow you to keep the overseas national if he or she wishes to go. Our consent will be needed for any change of training or work experience with another employer. That employer would need to make a fresh application to the Home Office on form OW22 and send evidence that the previous approved employment had finished or is about to finish.
