SIR GEOFFREY HOWE

1. Sir Geoffrey Howe telephoned me yesterday to bring me slightly more up-to-date on his plans to visit Japan from 13-18 June. He had forgotten that he had already spoken to me about this and that I had promised to alert

Sir John Whitehead. I gather we have had no written reaction from Sir John Whitehead, but I asked Sir Geoffrey Howe to let me have a rough outline of his programme, which I will send to Tokyo. The arrangements for his visit are being primarily organised by the Japanese, but I think he is keen to receive attention from the Ambassador.

2.

He also said that he had been invited to give a speech in Hong Kong at the end of September. He will be travelling out on about 24 September and had it in mind to go on and pay a visit to China. This was still a gleam in his eye, and he promised to revert to me as and when his plans became clearer.
