The sort of questions Members of the Committee will want to ask are:

1.

2.

3.

4.

What are the opportunities for trade with the UK?

(including comment on sectors of industry significant to UK trade, discussion of balance of trade, comparison with trade with other G7 and EC countries).

How has the situation changed since the Committee's last visit to the region in 1985? What future developments are envisaged?

What barriers or hindrances are there to trade?

(economic, technical, political, diplomatic).

How could further trade be encouraged?

It may help those planning the programme in each country to take into account the following points: (a) it is best not to start the Committee's programme with departure from the hotel before 9.00 am, unless required for the purposes of travelling; (b) if the Committee will be in a city for two nights, one can be left free of official engagements (c) if an evening engagement is planned, the day's meetings should be concluded by about 4.30 pm to leave time for reading and research before that evening event.

Members taking part

The following are Members of the Committee: Mr Kenneth Warren MP, Chairman, Mr Menzies Campbell MP, Mr Jim Cousins MP, Mr James Cran MP, Mr Stan Crowther MP, Dr John Gilbert MP, Sir Anthony Grant, Dr Keith Hampson MP, Mr Doug Hoyle MP, Mr Robin Maxwell-Hyslop MP, Mr Barry Porter MP. They will be accompanied by Mr Andrew Kennon, Clerk of the Committee and Ms Lynn Gardner, Assistant Clerk. At present, I expect all Members to take part, but in practice the hotel party will probably number about 10. We will keep you up to date with the names of the MPs taking part in the visit.

Accommodation

Posts are asked to make hotel bookings at an hotel convenient for the Committee's meetings. The cost of the hotel should not exceed half the Class A subsistence rate for the city concerned, to prevent the necessity for conference rates to apply. (If this gives rise to difficulties, the Committee staff should be consulted). If possible, UK official or public service discounts should be obtained on the hotels. Members will be personally responsible for settling all their hotel bills on departure.
