Jear Mer Calder,
The Trade and Industry Select Committee has decided to conduct an inquiry into United Kingdom trade with Hong Kong, the Chinese hinterland (Guangdong and Fujian) and Taiwan. should be grateful for your assistance and that of posts overseas in making the necessary arrangements.
I
They plan to conduct a visit to the area from 29 February to 12 March 1992. I appreciate that both in Hong Kong and Taiwan there are particular local administrative arrangements different from the Embassies abroad with whom we normally
| deal. Please let me know of any particular problems which may arise. I expect that some delicacy may be required concerning the Taiwan stage of the visit. The Committee does appreciate that the Anglo-Taiwan Trade Committee in Taipei has only a small staff.
The Chairman of the Committee is writing to the Chinese Ambassador seeking a formal invitation to visit China.
Nature of the Visit
The purpose of the visit is to enable the Committee to assess future trade prospects between the UK and Hong Kong, the Chinese hinterland and Taiwan. The Committee will be taking written and oral evidence in London prior to the visit. They plan to produce a report on this subject in April.
A note on the Committee's terms of reference, its interests and composition is attached. This can be distributed to anyone involved in the Committee's visit.
