VISIT OF THE PRIME MINISTER TO CHINA AND HONG KONG

The Prime Minister has decided to visit China and
Hong Kong from 30 August to 5 September and has asked the Foreign Secretary to accompany him. We need as a matter
of priority to secure Chinese agreement to these dates,
and the Foreign Secretary hopes that the Prime Minister
now give us authority to put the dates to them.
planning purposes the Prime Minister may welcome some recommendations about the itinerary and programme
content. On the assumption that the dates causes the Chinese no difficulty, we shall write again shortly with some suggestions about objectives for the visit and
tactics.
ITINERARY
Ideally it would be desirable for political and presentational reasons to make two stopovers in Hong Kong, one (briefly) on the way to China and the other
