PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO CHINA AND HONG KONG

Please approach the MFA and tell them that the Prime Minister wishes to take up Premier Li Peng's invitation at an early date. He proposes a visit between 31 August and 2 September and hopes that this will be convenient. He will be visiting Hong Kong immediately after Peking. He will be accompanied by the Foreign
the Govenor of H-K- Secretary, his personal adviser (Sir P Cradock), and a party of officials. He will travel by VC10 but the Foreign Secretary will join him in Peking travelling by commercial means. Wives will
not be included.
2. You should add that the Prime Minister sees this as a working visit with the minimum of protocol. He does not (not) want a
guard of honour (see para 6 below). He much looks forward to
good and businesslike discussions with the Chinese leaders and to the signature of the MOU as a basis for the improved management of the transition over the next six years in Hong Kong.
