General Aims of the Deportment

Health and Personal Social Services

To promote the health and social welfare of the people of Northern Ireland through the provision of a balanced mix of quality services including greater emphasis on prevention and care in the community, together with improvements in cost effectiveness in services provision and management.

Social Legislation

To promote and maintain social legislation in line with current thinking and practice taking into account local perspectives and to provide birth, death and marriage registration and population
censuses.
Social Security
To provide, within the Government's wider social and economic policies and in parity with Great Britain, an efficient and responsive system of financial help for the unemployed, the sick, the retired and those in need.
