1. Alan Paul has asked me to reply to your letter of 26 April.
2. Taking your points seriatim:

(a) The Earl of Arran was included in the first visits lists Alan sent you under his letter of 3 October. But in fact we have just learned that he will not now be visiting Hong Kong on the way back from his tour of Brunei, Singapore etc. Apologies for including this on our latest list but the MOD had omitted to let us know that the visit to the Hong Kong garrison was taken out of the programme.
(b) Apologies for the obvious typo as you say this should
have been July.
(c) As you will by now have seen from FCO telno 481 in Peking, Mr Gummer's visit (though approved in principle) is still the planning stages. We shall of course follow up with details when things firm up.
Mr Sainsbury intends to visit Japan later in the year but it has not yet been decided whether he will take in Korea or Hong Kong during the tour.
(d) Many thanks for this useful update.

(g) You are correct. This is simply the 6 monthly meeting idea, allowing for a further meeting between the Secretary of State and Qian (somewhere to be determined) in the Autumn. Hence a visit to China/Hong Kong next Spring.
